Astrology’s Attraction For Me

Maggie-Cope-July-2015I first became interested in astrology as a kid, when I would dip into my father’s many books on the subject. He learned from his grandfather, a noted astrologer in his time, who was known as Agar Zariel, whose system of  House Divisions is still used in some astrology circles – House systems being a way of dividing the 360 degrees of a circle into 12, usually starting with the horizon or rising sign. The family was so involved with astrology that my father was even named David HORACE COPE ! One of my brothers also got Horace, but he’s quietly let that fade away.

I had put that interest aside for many years until after I moved to Hillier Park from Melbourne in 1989. I enrolled in a 4-year course of study leading to sitting and passing exams set by the Federation of Australian Astrologers – even winning a medal for being first in one exam. I was “lucky” that two world class astrologers had set up in Adelaide and had just started a daytime class which suited me.  “Lucky” meaning that I was in the right place at the right time, and there was a significant planetary movement affecting my natal chart.

One of my greatest learning experiences during my studies was to see that many things made sense at last, and I understood more of people close to me. Even just the use of the elements – water. air, earth and fire was illuminating, as was noticing Full Moons and eclipses, and all the stars.

Since then I have done many readings for clients and generally kept abreast of the latest developments. There has been an incredible surge in astrology since the coming of computers and great software, some of it world-class and originating in Adelaide with Solarfire.  Also translations are ongoing from ancient sources, eg Greek and Arabic which shed new light on this ancient Science/Art.  Some ancient cultures thought of the dead as moving into the sky as stars, and this morning I thought – perhaps that is true – no wonder the Universe is expanding !

My interest is in the psychological aspects of astrology and in timing, which I find helps people understand themselves and their progress through life better. I enter data into my computer – date, time and place of birth, and seconds later I have a chart of the Sun, Moon and Planets at their birth and the areas of life they affect. (This used to take many hours before computers.)  I don’t believe in exact predictions of events. What I see is different energies combining and playing out in different fields of life, with good indications of timing. People can choose what they do with those energies.

Sometimes a client is feeling confused, wondering what’s going on and what’s next, but that is often a sign that a particular cycle is coming to an end and it’s time to let go. Everyone has these periods – cycles begin and build, and then come to an end. They can vary in length from 2, 7, 12, 29 years.

We are Spiritual Beings expressing through human forms.  The astrological influences that are present help to shape our life course, presenting each of us with opportunities to grow and express our Spirit.  I’ve found that understanding our astrology helps us make sense of the particular life path we’ve taken.  It enables us to have more compassion for ourselves and for others and to not take our human experience so seriously but with a sense of wonder as we realise that the Divine has used the stars and planets to aid us on our life path to become the person we are designed to be.   How amazing is that?
